In India, Netflix is exploring a new Mobile+ package. The Rs 299 package allows users to stream video in HD resolution on one device at a time, whether it’s a smartphone, phone, or desktop/laptop. The Mobile+ plan is currently being checked on a small few consumers and will be broadly phased out if a positive response is received. “We launched the mobile plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice Mobile+ brings. We’ll only roll it out long-term if they do,” a Netflix spokesperson said. The Mobile+ package is clearly a step forward from the Rs 199 plan unveiled in 2019. The most accessible India-exclusive package allows consumers to download a video in SD resolution and on only one mobile device at a time. Currently, Netflix smartphone users in India are streaming more than streaming network members worldwide, which is one of the key factors behind the testing of the new program. “There are many different product characteristics we have done, alliances and payment integrations, but we’re working very much to make our offer more affordable in India and appealing for our members and prospects,” said Netflix Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer to the analysts in April last year. This test is also followed by the streaming giant unveiling the most significant programming scheme in China, which is planned to launch within the next year with over 40 original titles. Since its debut here in 2016, the company has commissioned some 90-100 productions, including 30 films. That said, through a number of new information-technology (Internet-oriented and Digital Media Ethic’s Code) rules, the Indian government has strengthened its hold on the content of video streaming sites. A new three-tier “self-regulatory” complaint correction mechanism is needed for Netflix and others, where the information and the broadcasting department exercises full monitoring in the process. It was announced last year that Netflix is evaluating the Rs 345 plan in the country with similar features. The price reduction of the mobile plan would place it in direct competition in this segment with Disney+ Hotstar, which already offers its premium plan for Rs 299 a month. However, Disney+ Hotstar lets users stream to two devices at a time, like TV, desktop, smartphone, and more. Currently, the entry-level package that lets users watch on TV starts at Rs 499 and requires users to stream HD content on a single screen at a time on a smartphone, laptop, or TV. The Rs 649 plan supports two displays at once. The Rs 799 plan is a big step up as it supports four screens simultaneously and enables video viewing in HD or Ultra HD, where possible. Netflix is easily downloadable as it is available on both the app stores (Playstore as well as Appstore). ioS users can just head on to the app store and search for the application to download it. Android users can do the same on the Google Play store. Users on the web can just type www.netflix.com to access the website. There are many offers available for Netflix Subscriptions, depending on the number of screens the user wishes to buy. Netflix plans in India start from INR 199 per month.
